We have open internship positions, currently unpaid, in linguistics and Natural Language Processing (NLP). We are specially looking for individuals interested in working on Persian, Kurdish, or Armenian.
Through our internship program, you can
gain practical, hands-on experience in working with cutting-edge NLP tools and frameworks;
work on interdisciplinary real-world projects and publications that can be showcased in your portfolio;
learn and improve skills in programming, data processing, machine learning, linguistic analysis, and Large Language Models;
apply linguistic theories and methods to real-world problems, such as linguistic modeling, language documentation, sociolinguistic research, or educational resource development;
explore the various subfields of NLP (e.g., social media and cultural analytics, language analysis tools development, sentiment analysis, hate speech detection, chatbots);
receive valuable feedback and mentorship and build connections with academic and industry experts, researchers, and peers.
These roles are primarily a learning opportunity, so passion for Linguistics, NLP and low-resource languages, a strong desire to contribute, and a proactive approach to gaining new skills are often more important than advanced technical expertise.
NLP positions
As a NLP intern, you will contribute to projects focused on developing and applying natural language processing technologies, with an emphasis on low-resource and underrepresented languages. Your responsibilities will include preprocessing and analyzing linguistic data, implementing basic NLP techniques, and supporting the development of models ranging from foundational tasks(morphological analyzer, tagger, parser) to social media analytics and knowledge graphs for semantic analysis.
You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of researchers and developers, gaining hands-on experience with NLP tools and frameworks. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about language and technology, eager to solve real-world problems, and interested in enhancing their software engineering and NLP skills.
Desired Qualifications
Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Data Science, Natural Language Processing, or related field.
Introductory understanding of NLP techniques and methodologies such as tokenization, lemmatization, and text vectorization methods like TF-IDF or word embeddings, and experience with data handling (Pandas, NumPy) would be useful
Basic proficiency in Python and familiarity with NLP libraries like NLTK, spaCy, or Hugging Face Transformers are desirable
Familiarity with or willingness to learn about LLMs and prompt engineering is a plus
Linguist positions
As a Linguist intern, you will support research projects aimed at analyzing and documenting languages, with a particular focus on low-resource and underrepresented languages of the Middle East and Caucasus regions. Your role will involve tasks such as data collection, transcription, annotation, linguistic analysis, and system evaluation. You will collaborate with researchers, software developers, language teachers and linguists to explore linguistic structures, develop resources, and contribute to innovative solutions in areas such as linguistically-informed language education or NLP. This position is ideal for individuals passionate about linguistic applications in cultural analytics or language pedagogy, language diversity, and interested in gaining hands-on experience at the intersection of linguistics, culture, and technology.
Desired Qualifications
Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Cognitive Science, or related field.
Introductory understanding of linguistic concepts and theories
Enthusiasm in applying linguistic analysis for social good
Ability to collaborate effectively with researchers, software developers, and other team members.
Willingness to learn new tools, techniques, and methods relevant to low-resource language NLP.
Sensitivity to the cultural and ethical considerations of working with low-resource languages, including their preservation and responsible use.
